The Event On Saturday morning, October 25, 2003, the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Dallas presented the 2nd annual Dogs in Drag. The event was held at Bark Park Central, in Deep Ellum to raise money for the Katy Trail. Dog lovers and their pets showed up in full Halloween regalia to compete in a costume contest for fun and prizes.
This event also marked the dedication of a sculpture for the Bark Park Central dog park. The sculpture is a gift made by the Gay and Lesbian Fund for Dallas and it was funded by the Dogs in Drag fundraiser held a year earlier. It was designed by the artist Terri Stone, and it was fitted with a metal plaque acknowledging the contribution from the gay & lesbian community. Ms. Stone was in attendance and talked about her inspiration and excitement for the whimsical sculpture, which depicts a dog catching a Frisbee.
Michael Soileau, board member of the Fund, noted, “ It’s a great opportunity to have fun and support those organizations which provide us so much pleasure in the city for ourselves and our pets”. He went on to explain that the funds raised will be used for a water fountain for dogs and humans to be located at the recently designed Knox Plaza on the Trail scheduled to open summer of 2004.
The event, which pulled residents together from Kessler Park, Deep Ellum, and Uptown, was fun for all and will be a continued tradition to benefit dog and pet friendly non profit organizations in the coming years. |
